Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Wedding by Love Me Do Photography

Earlier this morning, we chatted about our new ‘Wedding Week.’  While the ‘new’ aspect is more of an organizational thing – we have always posted weddings – we’re excited nonetheless!  We also couldn’t be happier about our debut feature for this first Wedding Week – a stunning day at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful wedding venues, captured by Love Me Do Photography.  Friends, we adore this wedding.  The first thing that struck us is that Yu San and Jesse got ready together, with Jesse sweetly helping Yu San button her dress, and she returned the favor by fastening his cufflinks.  This ranks high on our ‘favorite moments’ list and, though not traditional, really sets the tone for the day as a celebration of their love for each other.   Also in the spotlight are Yu San’s lush bouquet by Floradelphia and her BHLDN dress – these both look perfect against the backdrop of their favorite spots in the city where they met and fell in love.  And we just love how Elixr, one of our favorite coffee shops, had a cameo in their portraits!  The DIY elements {those place cards!} added refreshing and modern touches to the museum, which their guests enjoyed as they danced the night away.  This wedding truly is a work of art!

From the lovely bride:

We met in Philadelphia while working towards our PhDs. Since Philadelphia was our first exposure to living in the “big city”, we would toil in the lab by day, and relish in what the city had to offer by night. We spent a good chunk of our twenties doing this, so it was a no-brainer to have our wedding in Philadelphia. Our bridal portraits used some of our favorite places and things in Philadelphia as backdrops: a block of colonial era houses, the Barnes Foundation, murals, and even Elixir (one of our beloved cafes in town). We chose the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) as our wedding venue because, like us, it is a slight conundrum. PAFA is a museum that doubles as an art school. It is in the heart of downtown Philadelphia, yet we and many of our Philadelphian guests had never visited. The museum displays American art starting from the 19th century that is juxtaposed to contemporary sculptures such as a giant glowing paintbrush. Our aesthetics may clash sometimes, but more likely than not, they are a beautiful union. Our florist Floradelphia perfectly channeled this with classic-looking urns that held floral (and partially edible) arrangements bursting with excitement over the coming of spring. We also included DIY elements at our wedding, such as our chuppah and escort cards, to soften the grandness of the museum. Another great feature of PAFA was that the entire museum was open to our guests, which allowed those with two left feet to get lost in the paintings. However, to our surprise, many of our family and friends (and we quote Aunt Christine) “live to dance.” Getting two different generations of people on the dance floor was no easy task, but somehow our good buds Robotique DJs managed to please the crowd throughout the night with their all-vinyl record set. They even included a disco version of hava nagila! We’re still so amazed that everything and everyone was able to come together to create the work of art that was our wedding. We love our friends, families, and of course, Philadelphia! This love is reciprocated because as one of our wedding gifts, we received a Band of Nothing (Philadelphia-native rock band) t-shirt from the concert we missed due to our rehearsal dinner being at the same time.
